Buddhism

Buddhism, a philosophical and religious system, was founded by Siddhartha Gautama, also revered as the Buddha, in northeastern India during the 5th century BC. This complex tradition encompasses a vast array of beliefs, spiritual practices, and cultural traditions, all primarily derived from the teachings of the Buddha, collectively referred to as the Dharma.
At the heart of Buddhism are the Four Noble Truths. The first of these truths speaks of suffering, known as Dukkha, as a fundamental aspect of existence. The second truth discusses the origin of this suffering, which is primarily traced back to desire or craving (Tanha). The third truth provides hope, stating that the cessation of suffering (Nirodha) is indeed possible. The fourth and final truth outlines the path leading to the cessation of suffering - the Noble Eightfold Path.

The Noble Eightfold Path, serving as a guide for Buddhist practice, directs followers towards ethical conduct (Sila), mental discipline (Samadhi), and wisdom (Prajna). It includes right understanding, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. By following this path, Buddhists aim to liberate themselves from the cycle of rebirth and attain Nirvana, the ultimate state of liberation and peace.
Buddhism places a strong emphasis on personal spiritual development and the achievement of a profound understanding of life's true nature. The practice encourages mindfulness, meditation, and ethical living as tools to progress on the path to enlightenment.
There are three main branches of Buddhism: Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. Theravada is considered the oldest and most orthodox form of Buddhism, primarily practiced in Southeast Asia. Mahayana, on the other hand, is the largest branch and is prevalent in East Asia, including in countries like China, Japan, and Korea. Vajrayana, also known as Tantric Buddhism, is primarily practiced in Tibet and Mongolia. While each branch has unique interpretations of scriptures and practices, they all fundamentally adhere to the basic principles and philosophies of Buddhism.
